So what is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic Dance Music, commonly abbreviated as EDM, is electronic music that is generally produced for the purpose of being used in a club or other setting where dance-based entertainment is present. Electronic music refers to music produced using electronic musical instruments and technology. In today's EDM genre, the most commonly used instruments include synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers. In recent years, the role of personal computers and music production technology has heavily influenced the genre. Those interested in producing high-quality electronic music tracks are now able to do so easier and cheaper than ever; aspiring producers can mix, distribute, and market their music with little more than a laptop computer and an internet connection. Swedish DJ and producer Avicii became involved with making music during his senior year of high school and was able to achieve massive success by releasing his tracks over the internet and eventually attracting international attention.

EDM is more of a broad term that includes a multitude of other music genres. Some of today's more popular sub-genres include DubstepHouseProgressive House,Trance, and Techno. Each of these sub-genres that exists today emerged in one way or another out of the European nightclub scenes of the 1980s. As you explore the genre, perhaps you will decide as to which of the many types of Electronic Dance Music most suits your musical tastes.
